Blog #1 : First Blog of The Graphics and Gaming!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Heather. I am a Secondary English Education Major with a Math minor. I was so excited when I heard about this English class. I signed up because I need a English criticism class, but also because I thought it would be interesting to learn about gaming literacy (and play of course!). I am a newbie when it comes to gaming. I have only played Sega,N64,PlayStation, and a little bit of Halo on Xbox. I signed up to play Final Fantasy VII as my RPG. Lets hope I'm not too bad. haha.

The purpose though of this blog though is to reflect on Blankets. I think Craig Thompson had extreme guts. I heard this book was based on his life growing up. I will admit, I was a little bit emotional after reading it. It was a really touching story. This is one key concept that helps me define what I believe in literature. Novels, graphic novels, and movies can all move a person. It does not have to just be text in a book...it has to be the "text" which gives the reader meaning though. I think Blankets had many wordless panels that contained more meaning than words could ever convey. For example this picture---------------------->
Craig and Raina lay together and talk their beliefs. Even though they both are laying towards the bottom of the panel the focus on them is still very peaceful. I like this panel because all of the elements in it convey a relaxing mood. The snow falling, the bright candles, and how Craig and Raina are holding each others hands. :)

I am really looking forward to reading more graphic novels. I would like to attempt to someday teach a graphic novel in my classroom. I like that this class allows me to read many different graphic novels and become familiar with some I'd like to teach.

  1. I agree with what you said about Blankets. It was an emotional book. Craig seemed to be a relatable character. I mean, I was never a guy that got picked on. I was a popular kid, but I can understand where he's coming from. I think older Craig is more relatable. I like him was raced from a young age to be churchy, and i like that. I also draw a lot. But I was so sad when him and Raina broke up. It made it tough for me to continue reading.
